Climate Change
Climate Change & Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act 2007
In 2007, South Australia enacted the Climate Change and Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act, making South Australia the first place in Australia to legislate targets to reduce greenhouse emissions.
The legislation sets out three targets based around reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing the proportion of renewable energy generated and consumed in South Australia.
Wine Industry Sector Agreement
As part of the Act, the South Australian Wine Industry Association and the Wine Grape Council SA entered into the first Sector Agreement with the State Government in 2008. This two year project will inform the wine industry of issues surrounding climate change while encouraging and assisting industry to measure and report their carbon footprint.
The Wine Industry Sector Agreement is available for download in the Resources section of this website.
The first stage of the project informs, educates and creates industry awareness through development of an Information Package (available to download from the Resources section) and regional Information Sessions.
So far, over 140 people have attended Information Sessions in the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills and the Limestone Coast regions. Sessions will be held in the Clare Valley on 28 April 2009 and Riverland on 29 and 30 April 2009 - see noticeboard for details.
Grapegrowers and wineries are also being asked to show their commitment to the project by signing the Participant Commitment form available in the Information Package (Information Sheet 4, available in the Resources section). This shows their commitment to measuring and reporting their greenhouse gas emissions for 2009/2010.
The second stage in 2009/ 2010 will involve hands on application of the Australian Wine Carbon Calculator.
Resources for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Published in 2003 A Guide to Energy Efficiency Innovation in Australian Wineries is a document produced as part of a Commonwealth project with information that remains relevant today.
