Riverland

The Riverland in South Australia is the Engine Room of the Australian Wine Industry with more than 21,000 hectares of winegrapes being grown by almost 1,300 registered growers. The region can produce 500,000 tonnes of grapes, or 25% of the entire national crush in a normal year. The region also boasts the largest winery in the Southern Hemisphere at Berri Estates. Riverland growers are also among the most water use efficient growers in the country with more than 50% using "drip" irrigation and soil moisture monitoring technology.

Australia's wine export industry relies on the Riverland. The majority of wine produced from grapes grown in the region is exported to the UK, USA, Europe and Canada and in recent years to China and India, among others.

The Riverland Winegrape Growers Association Inc (RWGA) was established in January 2002 to represent and advocate on behalf of Engine Room growers in Viticultural, Technical and Agri-business issues. During this time the Association's elected representatives have actively participated in industry and government forums at regional, state and federal levels. It is through this involvement that the RWGA is now well recognised as a contributing organisation on behalf of Riverland grape growers at all levels.
