Succession isn’t sexy; no one likes thinking about death and what will happen after they’re gone, but as Mellor Olsson lawyers Matt Dorman and Callen Bubner say, burying your head in the sand doesn’t change the reality we all must face one day; and one thing you can do is be prepared… Matt and Callen spend the bulk of their time helping agribusiness families craft and implement succession and estate plans, laying a solid foundation for the future everyone can rely on when the time comes. This conversation will give you the nuts and bolts of how it all works, and answers the sort of questions you might have in the back of your mind from time to time.
Here’s Matt & Callen…

About Matt
Matt joined Mellor Olsson in 2011 after gaining experience at another inner city law firm.

He has acted for a range of clients, from individuals to corporate entities, providing advice in the areas of commercial law, property law, business succession, Wills and deceased estates. He has experience in numerous commercial, building and construction litigation matters.

Matt has particular expertise in working with businesses of all sizes from a range of industries across the entire spectrum of business advisory issues. This includes advising on issues such as legal structures and restructures, commercial documentation and business succession planning, as well as on day to day business transactional matters.

A key area of Matt's practice involves assisting agribusinesses and primary producers on the succession planning involved with transferring the farm to future generations. He works closely with clients' existing advisers, such as accountants, financial planners and banks, to ensure the most tax effective and best outcome is achieved for all family members.

Complementing his advisory and transactional practice is his work in assisting clients to resolve complex commercial disputes, including partnership disputes, shareholder oppression claims, shareholder disputes and complex trust disputes.
About Callen
Callen joined Mellor Olsson in 2014. He has over a decade of experience in general legal matters and is passionate about providing an outstanding legal service to the community of Clare and its surrounding areas.

He has a diverse practice and advises clients in a range of business succession and restructuring, general business and property transactions and conveyancing matters. He has a large practice in Wills and estates where he advises clients on important documents including Wills, Testamentary Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Advance Care Directives and general estate administration. He also assists clients with family law issues with a particular emphasis on property settlement matters. A significant part of Callen's practice involves acting for people involved in the agricultural industry, such as farmers and viticulturists, and he also acts for local small to medium sized businesses.
With the growing need for renewable energy, Callen is increasingly advising landowners on legal agreements in relation to environmental activities such as wind and solar farms.

Callen was born and raised in rural Eyre Peninsula and since starting his career has chosen to practise in rural areas. Understanding the importance of contributing to his local community, he frequently assists a number of not for profit and sporting groups with legal issues. He regularly visits Burra, Kadina and Riverton to assist local residents with their legal needs.

Mellor Olsson is one of the largest and oldest law firms operating in South Australia, employing over 90 staff. Our origins date back to 1875 and we remain independent and South Australian focused. We pride ourselves on being approachable and providing quality legal advice and service to our clients.
While the firm itself and the nature of legal practice has changed considerably since 1875, vital elements such as the trust and confidence of our clients remain as important to us as ever.
